Tomb Raider Origins

According to gossip on the internet Tomb Raider Origins could be the title for the next instalment of the series. How much of it is only an early concept and what of it will become reality is uncertain at this point.

The story brings Lara to her past. Her research vessel has been caught by a storm and Lara is stranded on a mysterious, desolate island near the coast of Japan. Even though there are signs of life on the island it is abandoned and strange noises fill the air.

The following features have been revealed:

Quoted

* Hunt or Be Hunted: Evade, outsmart, track, and kill the mysterious enemies that hunt you as prey.
* Survival Action: Brutally attack and defend yourself as you fight to survive through visceral one-on-one melee combat.
* Strategic Weapons: Gain an advantage in combat by finding an array of different melee and ranged weapons including a variety of guns and the hunter's ultimate weapon, the bow.
* Creative Survival: React and adapt to the island by using only that which you can salvage from the environment like climbing axes, rope, and machetes that can be used to unlock new traversal and combat gameplay options.
* Free Movement: Scramble up a vertical cliff, sprint and leap across a huge chasm, steer mid-air to land a misdirected jump. There is no right way to traverse, survive, and explore the harsh environment of the island.
* One Cohesive World: The diverse multi-region island is an open playground alive with creatures, weather, and natural events.
* Origin Story: This new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring the origins of Lara Croft's transformation into a hardened adventurer as you unravel the story behind the island's mysterious past.

Tomb Raider 9 - Christmas 2011?

According to a news article found on Eurogamer the next official part of the Tomb Raider saga, Tomb Raider 9, might come out in December 2011. Not surprising, considering the lack of news on the game so far and the fact that "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light", which should make the wait for the next game bearable, is coming out very soon. According to rumours the subtitle of the game could be "Downfall", however, just like the previously rumoured name "Origins" it's not been confirmed. What is confirmed is, that the game will come out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Other platforms are unconfirmed. Further, according to Eurogamer, former Crystal Dynamics employee Joel Boucquemont published some Tomb Raider 9 related artworks on his page that show a "devastated and deserted cityscape and some dark environments". It is uncertain how much of these ideas will still go into the game. His page seems to be down at the moment.

Tomb Raider Reboot Confirmed

As part of their preview on the December issue of their magazine, Gameinformer revealed that Tomb Raider will undergo a complete, and as Crystal Dynamics stated necessary, reboot. This confirms the earlier reports that the next Tomb Raider will have an "Origins" storyline focussing on Lara Croft's early character development. The gamer will accompany a younger, less experienced Lara who will face physical and emotional trauma during the adventure.

The title of the next game will simply be "Tomb Raider". To avoid confusion with the original Tomb Raider we will continue calling it Tomb Raider 9.

The January issue of Gameinformer, hitting news stands on December 11th, will contain a ten page exclusive preview of "Tomb Raider". A preview of the article reveals the following:

Quoted

- Lara is 21 in this game
- It's not only a reboot of the franchise but a reboot of the entire brand. As a result there will be no "real" Lara model this time.
- They're doing performance capturing with this game
- There are brutal deaths in the game this time. One is described as a deranged man stabbing Lara in the chest and then closing her eyes after she's dead. Another includes a boulder falling on her leg to trap her before another falls and crushes her head.
- CD won't talk specifics on weapons but concept art shows a bow, shotgun and pistol
- The lock on targeting system is gone and it now has a free aim system. CD says that it can compete with any of their competitors.
- "I think that the major difference between this game and the old is the concept of smoke and mirrors," begins Darrell Gallagher, the studio head at Crystal Dynamics. "There was an illusion of freedom because of streaming and loading that would pop you out in a different location, but this is absolutely real. You can literally go any direction that you see and carve your own way to the finish line instead of being guide."
- "It was important in the game to not only deliver the character arc of Lara Croft emotionally, but to deliver it in gameplay as well so the player gets to grow into a hardened survivor," says experienced director Noah Hughes. As the game unfolds, Lara will scavenge new tools and gear that augment her abilities. Lara's athletic prowess will also evolve. Some areas begin inaccessible due to physical limitations or scarce supplies. With the right skills and gear, however, the island is Lara's for the taking.
- There are base camps in the game. Here you can combine items to create something new and access a skill system to upgrade Lara's abilities. You'll also be able to use base camps to fast travel to different locations to minimize backtracking.
- You'll need to gather food and water in order to survive
- There are humans in the game, including some of the crew members from the shipwreck off the coast of the island.

Further you should keep an eye on the Gameinformer website and on ASurvivorIsBorn.com (aka TombRaider.com). More information is expected to be released on Gameinformer tomorrow (Thursday).

Trailer Reveals Release Date (Fall 2012)

The first trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider called "Turning Point" revealed the release date to be set for "Fall 2012". That's still a long way to go in which we will probably see more trailers and images from Lara's first adventure. The video shows the beginning of Lara's journey. Aboard the research vessel Endurance a young Lara Croft, fresh off of college, is relaxing in her bed, listening to music, when the ship is hit by an unexpected storm, she must struggle not to drown. Trying to reach Roth, on the other part of the damaged ship, Lara falls into the water. Later she finds herself on the shore of a mysterious island, in a graveyard of ships, among them the Endurance. She is forced to apply a tourniquet around her upper arm, before setting out for adventure, a bow on her back.

Quoted

Lara: A famous explorer once said, that 'the extraordinary is in what we do, not who we are'. I'd finally set out to make my mark, to find adventure. But instead adventure found me.

In our darkest moments, when life flashes before us, we find something. Something that keeps us going. Something that pushes us.

When all seemed lost, I found a truth. And I knew what I must become.

Delay to 2013 Rumoured

Please note, the following is a rumour: According to an article on German games magazine "Gamestrend" the upcoming Tomb Raider will be delayed until 2013. One of the reasons given are "problems with the new engine". As there is not really a "new" engine for the game, the question is, is it a problem with new features of the engine or is it simply not true. As the rumour came up during the weekend, we have no official statement from Crystal Dynamics yet. So it is uncertain if these rumours are true or if Tomb Raider will come out in the fall of 2012, as planned.

The source is in German.

Tomb Raider delayed until 2013

According to Crystal Dynamics' studio boss Darrell Gallagher the next Tomb Raider game has been delayed and will now launch during the first quarter of 2013. The reason for the delay is to have some extra time to polish the game further.
But the developer promised to show more footage of the game on E3 this year.

Gameplay Trailer Crossroads

The first gameplay Trailer "Crossroads" for the upcoming Tomb Raider, released 2013, will go live on GT.TV on May 31st. It will be released at 10PM PST/1AM EST. A preview of the full trailer can be found on Gametrailers.

The short video shows Lara overlooking the wrecked ships in the bay, trying to catch drinking water with her hands, lighting a camp fire, starting to balance across a fallen tree, walking across remains of what was probably a plane, climbing on the remains, losing grip and falling to the floor.

She can be heard sending an SOS: "Mayday, mayday. This is Lara Croft of the Endurance. We've stranded on an island in the Dragon's Triangle. We need help and medical supplies. Please respond."

Trailer Reveals Release Date: March 5th 2013

The new "Crossroads" trailer, which was released in preparation for the upcoming E3, and can currently be viewed on IGN, gives further insight into the game and reveals the release date, March 5th 2013, for the upcoming Tomb Raider title.

The three and a half minute long trailer once again starts within the scavengers den, with Lara being a prisoner, tied up in a bundle suspended from the ceiling and the ensuing escape. Afterwards the bits from last weeks preview trailer, with Lara sending and SOS ("Mayday, mayday. This is Lara Croft of the Endurance. We've stranded on an island in the Dragon's Triangle. We need help and medical supplies. Please respond.") follow. The new parts of the trailer see Lara picking up a bow to shoot a deer for food. She apologizes to nature for taking the deer's life. Via radio she is contacted by Captain Roth who tells her that the remaining survivors of the shipwrecked Endurance regroup at his current location. The trailer further shows Lara fighting a wolf and trying to rescue a crewmate from captivity. After failing she tells the rest of the crew what happened. In a further scene Lara is once again captured and her hands are tied behind her back, but besides that she is able to move and tries to flee once again. When a man with a gun stops her, and all hell breaks lose, she manages to get a gun and kills one of her captors with it.
Once again we hear the familiar lines from an earlier trailer: "You can do it Lara, after all, you're a Croft." - "I don't think I am that kind of Croft." (While saying this, Lara picks up the handgun, probably disproving what was just said.) - "Sure you are, you just don't know it yet."
The trailer ends with a lot of action scenes that show us that life on the island won't be as desolated as first thought; Lara will shoot from behind cover, climb (often with her surroundings crumbling beneath her touch), swim, engage in hand-to-hand and run for her life. All-in-all it looks like Square Enix is following the footsteps of other successful Action Adventures of today.
