Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life

Lawrence Gordon reported that a script for a second movie already exists and Paramount is also interested in making a second movie. But Angelina Jolie said she's only going to be Lara if the script was much better than that of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life

First rumours about the movies story hint that it will be more about Lara Croft kicking some ass than her family background.

In the beginning of the movie Lara will be in Santorini, Greece, where she's looking for a treasure and then enter a fight scene with a group of badguys.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life Pictures

Two images of Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft have surfaced. The first shows her on foot, and the other one riding a motorbike. She is wearing light brown trousers, a brown gunrig and a golden flight jacket with Chinese design. Her hair is tied in a ponytail. Overall she does not look very much like the Lara Croft known from the games.

3(r)d Movie Rumours

One might think that there is nothing to report from the Tomb Raider universe, which is unlikely with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light on our doorstep. Once again the topic of a third movie has been brought up with a new name for a possible Lara Croft actress, this time the 29 year old Kimberly Kardashian. If you are not fed up with "reboots" and "movies being in 3D now", you may still hope for a third movie in the near future.

Third Movie Now Confirmed for 2013

As The Hollywood Reporter now confirmed, a third movie is actually in the making, with others to follow if it well received. The film which is supposed to have an Origin Storyline (also see reports for the next game instalment "Tomb Raider" (9)) is aiming for a 2013 release date. Graham King's GK Films has acquired the rights for the movies and will produce the film in corporation with Tim Headington.

As the producers are aiming for a young and dynamic portrayal of Lara Croft it is unlikely that Angelina Jolie will return as the British archaeologist. A writer for the script has not yet been found.

GK Films Teams up with MGM for Tomb Raider

In 2011 it became public that GK Films had aquired the feature film rights for Tomb Raider. Now it was announced, that they teamed up with Metro Goldwyn Mayer for this endeavour. Production will begin immediately, a cast however had not been announced yet.

METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER STUDIOS PARTNERS WITH GK FILMS TO PRODUCE TOMB RAIDER

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) has acquired the feature film rights to TOMB RAIDER and will develop the new action adventure franchise based on the Lara Croft video game franchise in partnership with GK Films, it was jointly announced today by Gary Barber, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, MGM and Graham King, Founder, GK Films.

GK Films had previously acquired the TOMB RAIDER film rights in 2011 from interactive entertainment company, Square Enix Ltd. King will serve as producer and development of the first film will begin immediately. No casting has been announced.

“Graham is one of the premier producers in this industry and I am delighted to be working with him on this exciting franchise. We look forward to developing more projects together in the future,” said Barber.

King said, “I am thrilled to partner with Gary and his MGM team on rebooting this successful TOMB RAIDER film franchise. The enthusiasm over the recent game release is very encouraging and we can’t wait to bring it to the big screen.”

The original TOMB RAIDER game was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and went on to become one of the most successful video games of the time. Eidos (including Crystal Dynamics) is now part of an international interactive entertainment group, Square Enix. A pop culture phenomenon, the original TOMB RAIDER games have sold over 35 million game units worldwide making Lara Croft one of the most recognized names in the gaming industry. Most recently, Square Enix released the highly-anticipated reboot of the series, simply titled TOMB RAIDER, on March 5, 2013 to critical acclaim.
In 2001 and 2003, Paramount Pictures made two feature films starring Angelina Jolie and based on the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions. The films grossed a total of $432 million worldwide.

3rd Movie Gets New Director

In regular intervals we are supplied with new rumours surrounding the planned third Tomb Raider movie, just we are now during the Rise of the Tomb Raider craze (which affects a third of the community at the moment). Norwegian director "Roar Uthaug" has been signed to work on the project that will also focus on the reboot storyline. Further Geneva Robertson-Dworet is in negotiations to write the screenplay. Prior to this it was said that Evan Daugherty, Marti Noxon, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have been working on the storyline for the movie. That does not bode too well for a consistent story.

One thing is for sure, until it's announced who will play the role of Lara in the movie, we still have a long wait ahead of us. Let's hope that they at least got "the film will detail Croft's first adventure" wrong, because, in 2-3 years we do not want to relieve the story of the Endurance once again, rescue Sam for the hundredth time and learn nothing new. But there is also another thing we do not want to see and that is yet another change to Lara's background story. Hopefully they meant to say "the film will detail one of Croft's early adventures" instead.

New Lara Croft Actress Announced

The never ending discussion about the 3rd Tomb Raider movie has hit a new stage when it has become public which actress will portrait Lara Croft.

"Alicia Vikander has signed on to star in Tomb Raider for MGM, Warner Bros. and GK Films."

The story of the movie will follow the reboot and show a young inexperienced Lara Croft on her way to become the seasoned adventuress we know from the earlier games - "Tomb Raider featuring Lara Croft" to "Tomb Raider: Underworld" - and the Lara Croft game series. Thus it was out of the questing that Angelia Jolie would resume her portrayal of the British grave robber and archaeologist. During the search for a new actress Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley had been a favourite among fans. These hopes have now been shattered when Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, known for "Ex Machina", has been announced as being cast.

As you also may have noticed the rights are no longer with Paramount, but lie with MGM, Warner Bros. and GK Films. Thus Graham King is serving as producer. Further Roar Uthaug will be directing the project and Evan Daugherty (screenplay) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (script) will serve as writers.

Q: Will the Tomb Raider movie take place in the Reboot universe?
A: Tomb Raider will take place in the reboot universe established by Crystal Dynamics’ award-winning game of the same name. MGM and Warner Bros. – under the talented direction of Roar Uthaug and scriptwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet – have creative freedom to best translate Lara’s journey to the big screen. We are very excited to see Alicia Vikander, Walton Goggins, Dominic West, Daniel Wu, and the rest of the all-star cast bring the spirit of Lara’s formative adventure to life in Tomb Raider.

Q: What is the plot of the Tomb Raider movie?
Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.
Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

Q: When will Tomb Raider release?
A: Tomb Raider will release to cinemas worldwide on March 16, 2018

Q: How far along is production of Tomb Raider?
A: Tomb Raider is currently filming in Capetown, South Africa

The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina,” “The Danish Girl”) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (“The Wave”), with Oscar-winner Graham King (“The Departed”) producing under his GK Films banner. The film’s production begins on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the wildly popular videogame franchise from Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.
